Guide

Which Digital Marketing Services Does Your Business Actually Need?

A plain-English guide to Google Ads, Facebook ads, local SEO, websites, video and AI reception for Surrey and Metro Vancouver businesses, and which to start with.

If you run a business in Surrey, Vancouver or anywhere in the Lower Mainland, you have probably been pitched every marketing service under the sun: Google Ads, Facebook ads, SEO, a new website, reels, a CRM, an "AI chatbot". Most owners we meet are not short on options. They are short on a clear answer to one question: which of these will actually bring me more customers?

This guide explains each of our digital marketing services in plain English, who it suits, and the order we usually recommend for local service businesses in Metro Vancouver.

Start with how customers find you

Every local business gets customers in one of two ways:

  • People who are already searching. Someone in Langley types "furnace repair near me" or "roofer Surrey" into Google. They need the service now.
  • People who are not searching yet. A homeowner in Burnaby scrolls Instagram and sees a before-and-after of a fascia replacement. They did not know they needed it until they saw it.

Search-based marketing (Google Ads and local SEO) catches the first group. Social media advertising (Facebook and Instagram ads, reels) creates demand from the second. Most growing businesses need some of both, but which comes first depends on your trade and your budget.

Google Ads: be there when someone searches

Google Ads management puts your business at the top of Google when people search for your service in your area. You pay when someone clicks.

Best for: urgent, high-value services where people search first, such as plumbing, HVAC, roofing repairs, emergency restoration and clinics.

What matters most: tight local targeting (for example Surrey, Delta and White Rock only, not all of BC), search terms that match what you actually sell, and a landing page that turns clicks into calls. If you are wondering what to budget, read how much a small business in BC should spend on Google Ads.

Facebook and Instagram ads: create demand and fill your calendar

Meta ads management shows your offer to the right people in the right neighbourhoods, even if they were not looking for you that day.

Best for: visual services and clear offers, such as exterior cleaning, fascia and gutter work, auto detailing, landscaping, renovations, salons and restaurants.

What it can do: for ANA Property Maintenance, Meta campaigns reported more than 500 leads from about $6,700 in ad spend over six months. You can read the full ANA Property Maintenance case study. A separate auto detailing campaign started 653 WhatsApp conversations at $3.28 each, which we break down in this WhatsApp ads case study.

Local SEO: show up on Google Maps without paying per click

Local SEO is how your business appears in the Google Maps "3-pack" and the free results when someone searches "electrician in Coquitlam" or "marketing agency near me". It takes longer than ads, but the traffic keeps coming without a cost per click.

The basics every Metro Vancouver business should have:

  • A complete, verified Google Business Profile with real photos of your work
  • A steady flow of genuine Google reviews from happy customers
  • A website page for each main service and each city you serve
  • The same business name, address and phone number everywhere online

Our local SEO checklist for contractors in Metro Vancouver covers the full list.

A website that turns visitors into calls

Every ad and every Google search sends people to your website. If it is slow, confusing or hard to use on a phone, you pay for clicks that never become customers.

Good website design for a local business is simple: a clear headline saying what you do and where, a phone number that can be tapped, real photos, reviews, and a short form. Speed matters too. Most of your visitors are on a phone, often on the go.

Short-form video and social media

Short-form video and reels are now the cheapest way to get attention on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. A 20-second clip of a real job, such as a rotted fascia board being replaced, often outperforms a polished graphic.

Social media management keeps your pages active so that when someone checks you out after seeing an ad, they find a real, busy business. Strong video also makes your ads cheaper, because the platforms reward content people actually watch.

The Response Gap: where most leads are lost

Here is what many agencies leave out. Marketing can bring you leads, but a lead is not a customer until someone answers.

When a call goes to voicemail at 7 PM, or a web form sits for a day, that homeowner usually books the next company on the list. We call this the Response Gap, and it is the most common reason good ad campaigns look like they "didn't work".

An AI receptionist answers every call 24/7, books appointments and texts you the details. Fast follow-up on forms and messages does the same for online leads. Read more about speed to lead for home service businesses.

Branding and custom software

Two services become important as you grow:

Which services should you start with?

For most local service businesses in Surrey and Metro Vancouver, we recommend this order:

  • 1. Fix the foundation. A fast website that works on phones, plus a complete Google Business Profile.
  • 2. Close the Response Gap. Make sure every call and message gets answered quickly, by a person or an AI receptionist.
  • 3. Turn on paid leads. Google Ads if people already search for your service, Meta ads if your work sells visually, or both.
  • 4. Build long-term traffic. Local SEO, reviews, video content and service pages for every city you serve.

Putting these together as one lead generation system works better than buying them one at a time from different companies, because each piece makes the others work harder.
